addme | I've been here for a while but want to welcome all our new DWers

Hello to my old-time friends, the new folx migrating over here from LJ, and anyone who's been here but is looking for new friends. I'm Emerald Em. Call me Em. And here are the basics about me.

I'm 55. I live with my wife in Rhode Island in the U.S. We moved here from Boston two years ago, just ahead of the pandemic being declared. We've been married for almost four years; our anniversary is May 26th. Yes, married relatively late. But we were both waiting to find the right person. :-)

I'm a pagan/witch, a writer by desire, an editor by trade. I'm currently writing the first draft of a memoir which has to do with my experiences in the mental health system and as a disabled queer person living almost at the poverty line. Lots to do with intersectionality. Which I talk about a lot.

I am a cis bi woman married to a trans lesbian. We are owned by a cat. (Photo above.)

I can't promise I will read everything that you write, nor comment on it, but I do those things as often as I have spoons for.

I have several favorite fandoms and I've published a few fanfics on AO3. I'm there as JessamineHughes. I read science fiction, history, and general nonfiction.

And would love to interact with people sharing some of these interests.

I see we have quite a few mutual friends! I know Rhode Island pretty well after having been on several trips there over the years to stay with a friend (Newport). I absolutely love Newport, Providence and surrounding areas inc. Boston and the rest of MA. She's moved to Florida now so I don't go anymore.

We live in Providence and we love it here. I lived in Boston for 30 years, several of them with J. I love that city too, but damnitall we got priced out of the rental market. We wanted to stay in New England but not go all rural. Providence was the obvious choice.

Boston is lovely but Providence isn't so far from there, about an hour? Providence is pretty cool, too.

It's around an hour's drive from here to there, yup. And it's very cool. We landed without even trying to in the gayborhood so there are lots of queer folx in our area.

Editor, huh? If I had more lives I would have been one. I enjoy reading dictionaries. I studied the history of the genre in graduate school.

In my last semester of college I had a course called The History of the English Language, which was the best course of all in college. My final paper for it was on the history of the thesaurus. You and me, we're gonna be best friends for life. :-)

Fuck yeah! I took that class in college too. I wrote a paper on the history of the word smut, hehe. I also took Old English in graduate school. Please, let’s be besties for all times.

If you have a copy of the smut paper I would so love to read it. I think I still have a Word document of my thesaurus paper somewhere on my hard drive or in cloud storage. Or both; I'm a suspenders and belt girl.

Okay, actually I wear neither of those things--but it's a great expression. :-)

That's a fabulous expression. I think I have a copy of it on my laptop from graduate school. It collects dust on a shelf. I really need to boot it up and get what I want to save onto the cloud.

What sort of writing do you do?

Mostly stuff with original characters, and not even a lot of that lately >>; Inspo is a fickle mistress.

Mainstream fiction? F&SF? Just curious.

I guess fantasy, or sometimes fanfic adjacent. A lot of OC femslash. It's niche enough that I share with friends but don't often post to ao3.

We could have a great conversation about OCs and slash and things. PM me?
