hello!
Age: 21
Location: midwestern united states
I mostly post about: the things i can feel and touch and look at in my general surroundings; which is to say, journaling, and i also plan on foraying into discussing the books i read, the music i make/listen to, and things i think are cool and good :-)
My hobbies are: i do lots and lots and lots of stuff related to music (i listen and discover music on an almost obsessive level, i'm going to college to learn how to engineer and produce audio, i play several instruments and produce music at home, etc...), i've rekindled a passion for reading that's led to an interest in writing, i like to go on long walks at night and observe nature, i like to play video games (albeit a lot less frequently than in the past), and i have a keen interest in historical events
My fandoms are: i don't know if i'd go so far to say i'm involved particularly within fandoms, but as for specific works of media: musically, i enjoy fishmans, nick drake, stereolab, broadcast, the motifs, betelmire, jim o'rourke, the field mice (+ sarah records in general), the beach boys, ichiko aoba, elliott smith, brian eno, and many, many others; just check my rateyourmusic page "squid771" :D
i also enjoy (with regards to gaming), the yakuza franchise, the trails franchise (particularly the sky and crossbell games), the ace attorney franchise, disco elysium, and team fortress 2
as a general "others" area, i enjoy what i've read from fyodor dostoevsky, i enjoy cowboy bebop, samurai champloo, and works similar to them (i fashion it as early 2000s adult swim-core), evangelion, and studio ghibli films
I'm looking to meet people who: i'm relatively open to anyone!! but anyone that's willing to talk in depth about music or be wiling to discuss literature/history/politics/anything in my hobbies really lol with me would be really cool in particular to meet. i don't really have friends that fall in the latter category so i suppose i would have a preference in the latter? but i like meeting people!! which is a roundabout way of saying, once again: i'm relatively open to anyone!!
My posting schedule tends to be: whenever i feel it's necessary! could be twice a day, could be twice a month. this also determines how active i'll be on this website. we'll see how active that makes me ¯\_(ใ)_/¯
When I add people, my dealbreakers are: generally not into MAGA-types, people that put down other people, -ists, -phobics, etc... just be kind to people
Before adding me, you should know: i don't really have a lot going on to talk about so most of my posts are going to, in some capacity, involve somewhat incoherent stream-of-consciousness thoughts that might come across in a very adolescent way (specifically in regards to thoughts of isolation/depression/malaise of that effect), so if that's not your cup of tea be mindful and be please be respectful of that if that's not a dealbreaker. i'm trying to make sense of the world, much like everybody else
also... i'm really not that good at replying in a timely manner so please also be aware of that :D

with regards to what specifically i'm interested in with regards to history it really just depends, but i find myself being drawn to politicking of some variety-- past obsessions have included american politics from ~1964-1972, german politics from 1919-~1924 (and its very omnipresent economic collapse), and right now i'm researching the development of the state of zimbabwe and how its past under rhodesia still has shaped its path as a country. more of a general concept but i'm also studying leftist political theory to find where i align with the most specifically, but that's more politics than history ยฏ\_(ใ)_/ยฏ
i also really like alternate history!! it's in very early development but i plan on crafting a sort of alternate history scenario where the dutch keep enough colonial power to control at least the delmarva peninsula which gets independence as its own country instead of being part of the united states, which will be the setting of my very long-term writing project which reworks a multi-year DnD-like session i was heavily involved in. but i'm starting to ramble at this point :D
anyways!! that's enough from me! what about history interests you?

I'm definitely a lot more scattered when it comes to historical focus, but as a whole I'm especially interested in general historiography, and in the history of nationalism (which has led me to put the history of political territorial organization and administration in general in my to-research-further list as well). I've also dabbled in a lot of European imperialism history, specifically with regards to France and Madagascar considering well. that's my history, lol! Although lately I've been having a sustained interest in the development of Meiji Japanese State, which is simultaneously out of general curiosity (Japan is such an interesting case study regarding National History) and also in relation to present media interests I have!
Pleasure to add you back, you seem very fun!

as far as my favorite dostoevsky goes, i can only choose between C&P and notes from underground as those are the only ones i have read (with demons being on the shortlist to be read)... it's gotta be C&P. i'm not quite skilled as to articulating what exactly makes it tick for me, but it's a masterwork of character writing and exploration of the psyche. i particularly liked svidrigailov
i don't know how else to do spoiler tags...
and how he ended up as a foil for raskolnikov-- what he would be if raskolnikov truly threw out all regard for human laws and did had he pleased. a real bastard but i was enthralled when he was on the pagei don't know how else to do spoiler tags...
sonia was an invaluable part of raskolnikov's path to redemption, but like... pulcheria's love for raskolnikov turning into death by purported grief, svidrigailov literally shooting himself upon realizing he cannot find "pure" love, the marmeladov parents spiraling in spite of or because of their love for their family... it permeates throughout the whole work, and the ending with both razumikhin (who is a golden retriever in human form and i love him) and dunya marrying alongside sonia and raskolnikov having some sort of a happy ending, it gives the ending of the book a much more hopeful twinge than i expected when i was nearing the endno subject

I loved the bit where you think Dunya is totally done for and then she PULLS OUT A GUN I was popping champagne for her fr.
One thing that surprised me with C&P is how funny it is! Dostoevsky's sense of humour totally resonates with me. He's really timeless in that regard. Notes From Underground even moreso, he mastered cringe comedy with that one. I'd say in every single one of his novels there have been multiple laugh out loud moments for me.
I honestly didn't like Demons that much, and it pains me to say so because I really wanted to!!! Not that it isn't worth a read (it's still Dostoevsky) but I can't send someone into that book without warning them in good conscience. There are some really interesting ideas in there but it's one of those books where it progresses in spite of the plot rather than because of it. Don't let me put you off though. I just have a complicated relationship with that book. I'm maybe a bit of a propagandist but despite its length I would say The Brothers Karamazov is easier to read than Demons because the story is so engaging- TBK is easily my favourite novel I've ever read, not just my favourite Dostoevsky. He takes a lot of the ideas that are present in C&P (+ other works, which is why it arguably might be better to read TBK later on...) and takes them to their logical conclusions.
I added you on last.fm- we have very low compatability! I'm always looking for new music to listen to though. I spent most of my teens only listening to weird experimental stuff and only now am I branching out into more popular acts :)

i've heard that the first half of demons is kinda confusing? but gets wrapped up rather neatly in the second half. either way putting a book on DNF kinda irks me so either way i'm gonna do my best power through it ( ยด โฟ ` )
TBK i'm saving for last, or at least until after i read the idiot; this is probably reinforced by knowing that it serves as a good conclusion to some of his ideas again as you say
followed you back! i suspect that the affinity only tracks recent listens, since i definitely fw LRD, swans, coil, and bowie (with others to varying extents) and would think it would be a bit higher than very low!! if there's a specific vein of less harsh stuff that you're looking for i am always down to provide recommendations to the best of my ability, and i in turn am rather uneducated in the likes of more abrasive music :D

What is LRD?? I always like receiving recs, though I'm typically very slow at getting round to them :) I don't use any streaming services cos I'm a miser and it can take me ages to download stuff and load it onto my SD card haha. But if you have any recs that are fun/uptempo I will definitely listen sooner rather than later!

and here's to reading the idiot over the summer !! it might be fun to do a sort of joint read, kinda like a book club + with other dw users you may know that might be interested. thinking out loud a little bit but i figure it's a good way to connect :D
my bad!! that's les rallizes denudes
i'm the same with regards to getting around to recs so no worries there LOL
i'll definitely have to think about what to send as a rec that matches those descriptions!! finals are starting to wind up so it might be a little bit before then but i will definitely keep it in mind
