Greetings and Salutations

My name is Jacqui (though most people just call me J or Jax), and I'm 28 years old. I've been a bit of an infrequent blogger on LJ, but am looking to get back into it again now that I've moved online homes. I've just finished a teaching degree and will start my first year of primary school teaching next month. I'm also a writer, currently focused on getting my- as yet untitled- spec fic novel ready for submission. Most of my posts will focus on daily life and writing, interspersed with spasms of geeky joy, book reviews and rants.

I am totally not as gloomy as my default icon makes me seem.

Interests: Writing, art, reading (a lot, across genres and source cultures), history, teaching (critical pedagogy specifically, for any teacher-types out there), cooking, politics, social justice.

Stuff That I Love

Movies: Fish Story, Anwar, Brideshead Revisited, Inglorious Basterds, PoTC.

TV Shows: Three Kingdoms (the 2010 version, I haven't seen the 1994 version yet), Fringe, Breaking Bad, Justified and a shameful love of Survivor. I also used to love Lost, the US version of Queer as Folk and the UK version of Shameless.

Books: The Gormenghast trilogy, The Steel Remains, Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Anything by: K. J. Parker, Samuel R. Delany, John Avjide Lindqvist (especially Let The Right One In) and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. This is by no means a complete list, and does not include the numerous picture books that I adore.

Comics/anime/manga etc: Kuroshitsuji, The Ravages of Time, Batwoman, Mushi-shi, Watchmen, V for Vendetta.

Music: Everything from The Beatles to Natacha Atlas.

Anything Else?:

Fun Fact 1: I'm currently learning Mandarin, although I'm very much a beginner.

Completely Unrelated Fun Fact 2) I'm queer (bisexual being the closest fitting label, though personally I don't find it an adequate descriptor). I'm also in a heterosexual, monogamous relationship. If either of those statements made you think oh, one of those, then please don't add me.

Looking For: My adding policy is extremely relaxed- apart from the caveat I noted above- so if you think we'll get along or we share some of the same interests go ahead and add me. I'm not particularly involved in fandom, though I don't mind adding anyone who is- I am not, after all, lacking in the squee department- I'm just less likely to comment a lot on fannish posts.

-waves- Hello there Jax,

You sound absolutely delightful and I would like to add you to my journal, if you wouldn't mind much?

Yay a teacher type! I'm starting my student teaching next week (assuming they find a placement for me!) I'll have a k-12 special ed certification specifically for children with autism.

Yes, this is round one of student teaching. Then I have 2 more years of classes still to go. I'm learning almost nothing about neurotypical kids in my program. I really have to hope I get hired for an autism program because otherwise I'm going to be baffled by what's going on around me, I think!

I love teacher types! I'll add you! :) And, out of curiosity, since it's what first drew me to your post, is your icon by Stephanie Henderson? It looks like a piece I've seen by her....
