Another LJ migrant! With a lonnnnggg intro. Hey there.
Hey, all. It seems this place is pretty busy at the moment with LJ migrants, and I bet at least some of you who have this community on your reading lists are getting thoroughly sick of long intros. Hence and therefore, because I'm a considerate sort of critter[*] and because this is blasted long, I'm going to cut mine. Major facts and interests cut-tagged below: click if intrigued; questions and comments always welcome!
( Hi; my name is Lex. Or Falcon. Either's good. )I'm 23; 24 in May 2012; I'm part Polish, part English, part Scottish... have lived in north-east England all my life, can just about fake a decent-ish Scottish accent (don't ask why I'd want to; it's a quirk) and speak less Polish than I would like; I post fairly sporadically, though I'm trying to get better at being a more regular journaller; I have eighteen (nineteen if you count an industrial as two) active piercings, three tattoos and until relatively recently sported a deep green streak in my over-long hair and for some odd reason, people still tend to peg me as responsible (it's possibly the well-spoken accent I've got going on); and I'm studying English Language & Linguistics with a minor in Education, with a view to eventually lecturing in Linguistics.
I live with my girlfriend in a tiny studio flat in the north-east of England, where we're both students (she's Law and I, as I mentioned, am English Lang/Lings). We're hoping to get a bigger place next year, if I can get MA funding -- I've been offered a place on the course, it's just a matter of being able to afford it. Here's hoping. Failing that, I'll get a job somewhere and save up to pay for it at some later point. MA is kind of important in the long-term lecture-in-linguistics plan. ;)
I skipped out on school at the age of seventeen (one year post-compulsory; after my AS-levels, for those in the UK) and worked for three years in accounts before I had the stunning realisation that I really really hated it -- or at least didn't want to do that for the rest of my life, as much as I do respect accountants -- and did an Access course so I could go to university and do English Language & Linguistics instead. I love it. :D Stylistics drives me completely up the wall, but sociolinguistics is amazing.
I'm vaguely looking for a job, having recently quit my part-time gig at a local pub, and spend most of my free time writing, drawing, messing about on the internet, and procrastinating like crazy on the insane amounts of uni work I've got to do this year (whoops).
Writing and other fun
My primary interest is writing. I'd love to be a published author some day. I'm trying to start up a writing blog in the New Year (if you're interested, let me know and I'll kink you -- fair warning, most of the short stories I'd be happy to post online are LGBT-focused). I love comments, constructive criticism and general writing discussion, so if you like (or dislike and have reasons why) something I've written, feel free to tell me. When I post about writing on my everyday journal, talk to me. :D
Apart from my short story stuff, which is mostly slice-of-life type one-shots set in one of the worlds contained in my head (sometimes I wonder how there's room for any actual thought in there -- there's a sprawling urban fantasy set in a slightly-AU real world and two separate steampunky things going on, plus others I don't post about as much), I have an ongoing monstrosity affectionately known as the Novel-That-Isn't on the perpetual back burner. I've been 'working on it' for seven years plus (read: occasionally giving it a shot and then wandering off bored), but the current draft started life in Octoberish and is currently on 63,000 words. Which would be quite an achievement if all evidence didn't suggest the blasted thing is going to run to at least double that... It has vampires who don't sparkle, dragons who shouldn't exist, an ensemble POV cast (one of which is a straight-up psycho and another an unashamed bastard with an addictive personality), and is driving me mad in all the best possible ways.
I'm also a roleplayer (pretty much any time I'm on MSN, you can practically guarantee I'll be playing something with somebody), focusing mostly on original characters and interaction-driven plots. I'll do scripts-style or paragraph prose equally happily, and it's not completely unknown that I'll play fandom, if I'm familiar enough with the characters.
I do have a writing filter on my journal; just let me know if you'd like to be added to that. :)
Arty bits
I also draw now and then, or more precisely, muck about in Photoshop and with sketchbooks every once in a while. I'm not the best, but I have fun with it. Here's a very rough sketch of something I'm working on at the moment -- and if you can guess the fandom, by the way, because it's intended to be fanart, you're my new best friend forever. (Hint: the guy on the far left as you look at it is an OC, so don't worry about him. And Captain McEmopants in the centre-left needs some serious fixing-up before I do the proper lineart and colour it, I know). The problem is, we'll be damn lucky if that ever sees the light of day in any kind of completed state. I have an awful habit of wandering off from sketches...
Here, have a pencil sketch, another digital sketch (both original characters) and a couple of rare, lesser-spotted coloured pieces: originals and fandom (spot the fandom and become my new best friend for life. Hint: fella is the same OC as in the sketch above.)
If you like talking art, go right ahead. I don't post much about art -- it's more of a kick-back fun-times thing than the writing, which I tend to take more seriously -- but I'm just as open to comments and constructive crit on art posts, and I'd love to see yours, too.
Gender, sexuality and mentality
My idea of gender probably doesn't match up to yours (if it does, where have you been all my life?). In short, I'm bigender and... I usually say bisexual, because I like the two 'bi's together, but increasingly thinking I might be pan- or omnisexual instead. Oh, and male pronoun please -- it's more comfortable most days, and people seem to object to calling another human being 'it'.
I'm also polyamorous by nature, though currently in a long-term monogamous relationship with a rather awesome girl. She's fairly sure she's not poly, but we've discussed it and decided we'll talk about it if and when it comes up.
And the last one: like apparently a quarter of the UK population (and probably 90% of some areas of LJ ;P), I have depression. Except for the occasional minor flip-out, I try not to whinge on about it, but it's there, and sometimes it comes up. If that makes you uncomfortable, let me know when you add me and we'll talk filters. :)
Films, books, TV and fandom stuff
I'll try to tell you I'm not much of a films person, but I suppose there are one or two that I like. Let me think. The big one, which I've loved since I was a kid, is the original Rex Harrison "Dr Doolittle". I quite like the first Iron Man too (haven't seen the second one yet... I think there are only two so far. If we're up to three, I've missed something major -- but that doesn't especially surprise me), Avatar (blue cat-people, not The Last Airbender; not seen the latter), Sherlock Holmes, the Star Trek reboot, Labyrinth, just about any of the Cirque du Soleil DVDs (La Nouba is my favourite), and CATS. That was a surprisingly long paragraph considering I'm not a films person... :/
My reading tastes are fairly varied and I have trouble picking favourite books, so to give you a brief run-down, I read mostly linguistics textbooks and not as much fiction as I'd like to, at the moment. Most of what I do read is fantasy or supernatural to some extent, though -- and I have a definite fondness for murder mystery stories, psychological thrillers and paranormal fiction. Which is somewhat unfortunate, since almost every bloody book in the genre is some take or other on the old '[vampire/werewolf/warlock/etc] meets [beautiful girl/plain girl with a particular talent/cute but useless boy] and [drama/romance/250 pages of sex cleverly disguised as an 'edgy' novel] ensues'. Obviously, this means I have to write and publish my own vampire fiction ASAP. Or something. No, I am not a Twilight fan. Haven't quite gone so far as burning copies yet, but if I happened to smoke roll-ups and needed some paper for 'em, they'd be the first books in the house to go. (Girlfriend's copies, not mine. I feel dirty touching them.)
I do like a good bit of Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman or Stephen King; John Connolly's "Nocturnes" is my go-to creep-out book; give me a good psychological thriller and you've lost me all day; and I still have an abiding love for The Lord of the Rings.
When I watch TV, it's most likely to be Dr Who, Due South if I happen to catch it on (heck, I named my dog Diefenbaker), Red Dwarf for amusing background noise, or Supernatural. I recently got into the Mentalist (three years late, I think) and about a year ago pitched head-first into full-on Andromeda fanflailing (about eight years late. Whoops). And I did love Torchwood, until Children of Earth happened. I quite like the look of Fringe and Sanctuary, too, though I haven't managed to see any of either one yet.
I'm not especially active in any particular fandoms, but I have things I like, and I love talking about them. You're fairly safe assuming that if I mentioned it above, I'd be happy to discuss it with you (less so for films, but give it a shot anyway). There's a good number of them that I'll roleplay, too, if you swing that way, so if you were wondering, just ask.
Music!
I love music. Hell, I live for music -- well, I'm not a virtuoso, but I would much rather have iTunes open than the TV on. Theoretically, I play flute, but I haven't touched the poor thing in about six months and I was self-taught in the first place, so whether I 'play' or just 'bugger about' is pretty much open to interpretation.
As for what I listen to, it would take far too long to go through my entire favourites list, so here -- have some songs that are defining my life (or at least on permanent repeat) at the moment. There's "In Our Bedroom After the War" by Stars, "What About Everything?" by Carbon Leaf, "Another Day That Time Forgot" by Neil Diamond with Natalie Moynes, "Book of Days" by Enya, pretty much the entirety of Aether Shanties by Abney Park, "Lodi" by Creedence Clearwater Revivial, "Umbrella Beach" by Owl City... my tastes are eclectic, to say the very least.
Other favourite artists and bands include Adiemus, Annie Lennox, The Arrogants, The Beautiful South, The Calling, Capercaillie, Christy Moore, Dar Williams, Dashboard Confessional, Death Cab for Cutie, Dire Straits, Eleanor McEvoy, Eva Cassidy, Goo Goo Dolls, The Hush Sound, James Galway, Jimmy Buffett, John Tams, Journey, Kansas, The Killers, Lily Allen, Liz Phair, Marina and the Diamonds, The Moths, Murray Gold, Muse, Nanci Griffith, New Order, The New Pornographers, Pulp, Queen, R.E.M., Rufus Wainwright, Something Corporate, Spandau Ballet, Starship, Status Quo, Tori Amos, U2, Vertical Horizon and I could go on. No, seriously. There's relatively little I dislike...
Boring policy stuff
Please do let me know that you've friended me, otherwise I'll quite likely miss it for months, and I do believe in mutual adds. :] All of my entries are f-locked because, really, who needs their whole life all over the net, and who's likely to be interested in mine? If you'd like a look-in, drop me a comment on the lock post and the chances are I'll let you saunter on in. I ask only that you respect both my full locks and any custom locks you may be privy to. If I come up with something groundbreaking that you'd like to repost, just ask -- I'm vain enough to let you. ;]
I do not play oh-M-gee friends cut!1!!one! games with activity checks. If you feel you have something to add or you'd like to start a discussion, that's grand -- hop on in. If not, feel free to keep quiet and just read on in your own time. I won't cut you for protracted periods of silence, though I do ask that you extend the same courtesy to me.
If anything in my journal offends or upsets you, let me know in a calm and mature fashion so we can discuss it; I'll happily create filters or add you to existing ones so you don't have to see content which triggers, upsets or offends you. Really, I'm pretty easy-going. Any questions, just ask!
In closing...
If you actually read all of that... you must be really bored, or else I'm more interesting than ever previously thought. Even if you just skimmed through and are intrigued, I'd love to hear from you. Drop me a comment here or on my lock post, and I'll be happy to do a mutual add.
See you around!
