ar: "It's a lot easier to tell the truth usually." - Elliott Smith (Jayne you ignorant slut)

getting to know you~

Name: AR
Age: I'll be twenty-two at the end of July. (And yeah, that makes me a Leo. I know fuckall about astrology, so I don't know what my moon is or any of that shit, though.)
Location: USA

A little about me: I just graduated (exactly a week ago!) with a BA in music, and I'll be starting graduate school in NYC this fall. My field of study is musicology (which means that I'm interested in the academic side of music, writing papers and analyzing and so on), and my primary interest is rock music, especially from the 90s. I've vague dreams of becoming a respected Elliott Smith scholar, lol. (Actually, I've no idea whatsoever what I want to be when I grow up. I'm studying music essentially because I love it, and I'm undecided on whether or not I'll go for a full doctorate or just stop at a master's.)

I'm very close to my family, which is going through some upheaval right now due to the recession. I have two younger sisters, one of whom goes to college in Manhattan (the other one is still in high school). And blah blah blah, my mother and father, blah blah blah, pets, blah blah blah, friends from high school and undergrad. :D

I'm also a fandom-y little geek. You've been warned. ♥ Oh, and I love writing; I don't know if I have it in me to write a novel, but I want to give it a try someday.

Latest interests: In case you're interested. ^_-
Books: I've been reading a lot of graphic novels and lesbian literature lately--and the two have, on occasion, mixed, lol. Comic-books-wise, I plan on going through all of Y: The Last Man this summer and possibly finishing The Sandman (finally--I've been reading the series like a snail), among many others (Blankets, et cetera). I'm not sure if I'll be keeping up with the leslit, now that my class on the subject has ended, but I really enjoyed what I read and am thinking about rereading Stone Butch Blues for the express purpose of writing Jess/Theresa fanfic. ^^;; I'm also going to try my hand at Arthurana, the A Song of Ice and Fire series, and music history and theory review for sure. My main interests in books tend to be urban fantasy, classics, YA and middle grade, and culture-related non-fiction (especially music, as I'm sure you've guessed!). But I'll try to read just about anything once, especially if it comes recommended; I'm often too busy to browse, and I love talking about books with people after I read them.

Movies: Giving my mixed top ten (I keep separate top 10 lists for colour movies versus black and white ones) will probably be easiest. So! Harold & Maude, His Girl Friday, V for Vendetta, The Maltese Falcon, Velvet Goldmine, Citizen Kane, Benny and Joon, Jane Eyre, Annie Hall, It Happened One Night. I like...I don't know, it seems really pretentious to say that I like smart movies, but I do. I like a lot of silly things, but they usually have something intelligent going on in them, too. Movie musicals, movies about Nazis, movies about lgbtqai issues, romantic comedies, dramas--I dunno. I watch a lot of stuff, heh. I don't handle gory films very well, though.

Music: I find something to like in just about every genre I come across, but my home base is 1990s rock, alt-rock, and pop. Other major musical interests of mine include (but aren't limited to!): classic rock, classic country, bubblegum pop, traditional pop, folk, jazz (especially bebop and hot jazz), blues, 19th-century parlour songs, musical theatre, atonal music, cover songs, collegiate a cappella, and outsider music. I listen to a lot of Elliott Smith and David Bowie, so be prepared. XD

TV: I love Pushing Daisies like burning. D: It kills me that I didn't start watching until after it was canceled. I also love watching Sons of Anarchy, which thankfully isn't canceled, because who doesn't like Hamlet crossed with motorcycles? Other shows I watch include Frasier, Jeopardy! (the only game show I have an attention span for), Daria, Caroline in the City, Cowboy Bebop, and...et cetera. ^^;;

What I tend to post: Anecdotes from my day. Memes. Stuff about family, friends, classmates. To-do lists. Thoughts on what I've been reading/watching/listening to. Keyboard-smashing rants or ohgodohno sorts of posts. Melancholy thoughts that have nowhere else to go. Ecstatic thoughts that need to go everywhere. Occasionally, pictures (I've been meaning to show off some of my shots from a trip I took to Egypt in January, for instance).

I also have two side journals. One is my writing and art journal, [personal profile] witticaster. The other is my names journal, [personal profile] onomatomania. They're both friends-open.

Warnings: My journal can get kind of heavy. When I'm not happy, this is where it goes. If it becomes problematic for you, I can filter you out. Also, while I do my very best to respect all political backgrounds, please know that I'm situated pretty much on the left; I'm rabidly in favour of LGBTQAI rights and am a feminist. :D

Oh, yeah, and? Catholic. One of those pro-choice, pro-gay, liberal Catholics whose response to Pope Benny is often "Your Holiness, you are being a jerkface again, just so you're aware" but I am Catholic--because being so is more than just corresponding political views. I promise to respect your religious and spiritual views or lack thereof; in return, I ask that you respect mine.

Before we say "let's be friends!": Could you maybe introduce yourself, either here or on an open post in my journal? I'd feel a lot more comfortable if, after a nice conversation together, I knew that we'd get along okay.

If I haven't scared you off one way or another, I'd love to have a few more friends! ♥
