Greetings-a!
Hello there everyone!
I have been a member on here since September of last year and didn't really bother to look around to adding people but since most of my friends have left LiveJournal and are making their permanent homes here, I have decided to get me some friends.
A Little About Me
~ I am a twenty four year old, female, who lives in Scotland. I graduated from university (business) in 2009 and have been trying to find a full-time rewarding career since (damn you economy!).
~ I currently work part time in retail, which is not a good place for a cynical, socially awkward individual such as myself.
~ I am single but really quite happy that way.
~ I do not have any mental disorders (I notice it seems to be like a fashion accessory to add disorders but I am free of them!)
~ I'm have believe in God but NOT in organised religion of any kind. I have nothing against any of you being religious, in fact I love reading about peoples faiths or lack of so don't think I am going to convert you, life's too short for me to do that kind of thing.
~ I update daily. And like to think if I enjoy your journal will be very active on it. PREPARE FOR A STALKING! ;)
~ I often have quite "closed minded" opinions on my own journal but I will give fair warning and put things under a cut should I feel they might offend people. But I love people with different opinions so long as we can discuss things as mature adults and not go "OMFG I HATE YOU DIE!" because that is just pointless.
~ I love to read although I find I never really get enough time to read what I want to.
~ I collect and read Batman comics, avidly.
TV Shows
I download and watch some TV from time to time (as I am unwilling to pay a TV license and watch the garbage they show on TV!), whilst I don't talk about TV shows often or in great depth some of the ones I am watching at the moment are: Merlin, Fringe, Chuck, Blue Bloods, Psych, 30 Rock, Bones, Dexter, Eureka, Haven, Monk, Raising Hope, The Mentalist and Strictly Come Dancing
Film
Bela Lugosi is a man I greatly admire.
Mel Brooks is one of my favourite directors.
I find it incredibly difficult to pick a favourite actor or actress but if we go by what films I have with the most actor and actress recurring I would say by that standard Kiefer Sutherland is my favourite actor and Julie Andrews is my favourite actress.
My favourite genre is musical, with my top favourites being Gigi and My Fair Lady. Favourite films in general include: All Dogs Go To Heaven, Disney classics (especially Beauty and the Beast), Blazing Saddles, Dracula (1931), Dracula: Dead and Loving it, Spaceballs, The Phantom of the Opera, Moulin Rouge, Inside Man, Man on Fire, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Lost Boys, Flatliners, The Naked Gun series, Up, and The Road to Perdition.
Music
I have the weirdest taste in music I will listen to basically anything so long as it isn't too bassy (I class that as "ear rape"). My musical preferences are that of blues, oldies and instrumental so give me some Frank Sinatra, a bit of Long John Baldry or Two Steps from Hell and I am quite happy although due to my job in retail I have angry bands like Demon Hunter and Godsmack to listen to when raging out.
The Rules
As I said I do have opinions (heaven forbid they differ from yours) and I like to express my opinions on my journal, I will put up a notice and put it under a cut should it offend anyone so you don't have to read it but I'd appreciate if you respect the fact I am entitled to have my own opinion same as I will respect yours. I love discussion other peoples points of view though so don't think I am completely objecting to that.
I would prefer if you were not a flake... i.e. someone who isn't going to go "OMG YOU DIDN'T COMMENT ONCE YOU MUST HATE ME! I AM GOING TO CHANGE MY USERNAME FIVE TIMES AND NEVER SPEAK TO YOU AGAIN BOO HOO!" because this sort of thing I don't have the patience or time for.
I would like a comment from you once in a while, not all the time because I might not comment on your journal ALL the time either, but I'd like to be able to bond with you enough to talk and be on first name terms with you.
I update daily and like activity and advice from time to time, please indulge that side of me.
I like asking random questions sometimes so if you don't like someone randomly going "What do you think of toilet paper with words on it?" or something then maybe don't add me?
If I find we get on well and bond, you will have a friend for life, if not please let us grow apart gracefully and not have a drama explosion.
Have I not bored you yet? GOLD STAR FOR YOU!

I wish retail had more "cynical, socially awkward individuals" :-) Also, Spaceballs.

I am happy to have you around, if you want, and I feel sorry for any cynical socially awkward folk stuck in retail, it is not a good place.

I understand humans want to belong, but all I ever see, especially with younger people now are people claiming to have some form of mental disorder...
And on the LiveJournal "add me" communities I only ever notice people saying "Hi I am so and so and I have [mental disorder]..." so it does seem like an "in thing" to do.

I don't know, I've only seen that online as a forewarning so new friends wouldn't get weirded out or anything. There's also a difference between mental 'illnesses' and emotional 'illnesses' and I typically see the latter admitted to while online...alas, that is just me.

http://www.antipsychiatry.org/exist.htm < TL;DR version mental illnesses are a product of their times and come and go like fashion does.
I didn't think you were challenging me. :) I cannot be bothered digging through the rest of my bookmarks to find other examples but if I can be bothered later on I'll dig up some more and send them your way.

However, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia were even taught to me in my biology class because they are mental illnesses strongly grounded in human biology. They are chemical imbalances which cause both of them and that is why medication is prescribed (especially with schizophrenia, as that disorder can be incredibly dangerous if left untreated). Most of that article is just incredibly hard to take seriously because the man writing it is using ill-informed sources and, from his very writing style (and domain name), is obviously trying to make a strong case against medicating people for mental disorders. For this sort of scientific endeavor you really want someone more impartial. Mental illness clearly exists.
However, the 'mental illness as a fashion statement' article, I can see his point. I had a lot of friends growing up who romanticized their feelings of depression - whether clinical or not - to levels that I'm still sure were just bids for attention. And people who take away from the seriousness of mental illnesses by doing that are just disgusting.

"In this pamphlet I will show that there are no biological abnormalities responsible for so-called mental illness, mental disease, or mental disorder, and that therefore mental illness has no biological existence."
I stopped reading there. That's just...wow. I really hope you honestly don't take this seriously.

But the first article seems legit...though it does sadden me that many people apparently are given the impression that if someone admits to having any mental or emotional issues, that they're just ~trying to be different~ because of such a thing. Like, I met someone on Livejournal whom I later found out was a regular cutter, but she actually was a very normal, intelligent person who simply self-harmed out of stress (and having a bad living situation), who ended up overcoming her issue and has since not cut for about two years now.
IDK, makes me sad when there are people in the word who do stuff like that who aren't doing it to 'be cool' because they're usually just grouped in with the 'emo kids'.

It is kinda sickening the ones that "fake" it. But I have nothing against people with real ones, I want to be able to help them somehow, but the fakers, I just get irritated with and perhaps I just know the wrong types of folks but it seemed for a while all I did was run into "fakers" and that made me write what I did in my introductory post.
