Name: I generally go by Tom. Some people call me Thomas, but it feels unnatural and stiff. My family calls me Tommy. I'll answer to just about anything, but please never spell my name as Thom. I think it look stupid and I genuinely hate it.
About Me: I'm a middle aged software developer who works from home. A lot of my life has changed in the last two years due to Covid and other health concerns, which I'll mention in a minute. In normal times, I like to travel, preferably internationally, when circumstances allow. I've been to at least 12 that I can remember off the top of my head. I'm also active in community theater, and generally tend to do at least one show a year. Although I work with computers, my original aspiration was actually to be an opera singer or an actor, but I decided I'd prefer to actually earn a living.
Politically, I'm extremely liberal. People calling me a socialist as an insult genuinely puzzles me as I'm pretty damn open about being one. I don't generally like to discuss politics in this space, though I may occasionally rant about something that really pisses me off. I do not like political debate as it often degenerates into something ugly, and I just have no desire to put my energy in that direction anymore. I believe that black lives matter, I support lgbtq+ rights, and generally think that people should do whatever the hell they want to do, provided they don't harm anyone else doing it. I also hate guns.
Who am I looking for? I'm pretty open to everyone provided you're not a dick. If you're highly conservative or an evangelical christian, you might want to move on, as I'm probably going to offend the hell out of you. Mostly, I just want people who are interesting, and generally not mainstream. Some of my friends call me a "martian" because I'm generally either completely ignorant of, or highly disdainful of a lot of pop culture. For example, to this day, I cannot name a single character or actor on Melrose Place, I don't know anything about the "Real Housewives of..." insert your own over-privileged community, I know nothing about rap, and I can't stand Adele's voice, personality or general existence. I can, however, tell you more than you ever wanted to know about opera, discuss Shakespeare with some reasonable knowledge, discuss similarities and difference I see between Julius Caesar and George Washington, and geek out with you about various things in geek culture.
I haven't used this much in the last year, but as I'm drawing back from the echo chamber of idiot rage that is Facebook, I'm going to be using this a lot more frequently.
Anything Else? In April of this year, I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. As of this writing, I'm about to undergo a bone marrow transplant. Hence, a lot of my most recent entries are about that. That said, my journal is not just about that. I just happen to be in the middle of that particular shit sandwich eating contest. It should be noted that I most of my posts are friends locked, but getting added as my friend is pretty easy. I also do not censor myself at all in my journal, and will talk about literally anything that comes to mind. Cave lector. (reader beware)

All my posts nowadays are public, so I haven't been granting anyone access. Just subscribe, and you see it all. Or unsubscribe any time you get bored. I don't mind either way, and I'm not tracking subscribers or taking anything personally.
And, inversely, I subscribe or unsubscribe from other blogs just to keep my reading list interesting. It's nothing personal if I unsubscribe. I'm just managing my reading / spare time. 😇

Hi Tom! I just added you to my friends circle. I'm a writer, queer person, and SF fan. And also don't know much about pop culture, so we have that in common. Sorry to hear about your health issues. Anyway--see you around on the site!
