➤ INTERESTS & HOBBIES: Fibre arts, sci-fi, the Sims video games, animal crossing, queer culture, etc. I knit, spin, weave, do cross-stitch of a cheeky sort, love British television, fountain pens, bullet journals, planners, notebooks, all kinds of things. Also very into tech, but decidedly an apple person personally. Don't care what others use, but I like my apple ecosystem. Oh, as a side note, I am converting to Judaism (reform) and that comes up in posts. Mostly weird things I read in the Talmud, like not bringing goats into the bathroom in case they turn into demons and it's rude to summon demons in the bathroom. I also have a cat I am prone to crying over the absolute perfection of at the drop of a hat.

I'm nonbinary and my pronouns are they/them and if you have a joke about pronouns, please make sure it's original at least. Bigots so far only have the one.

I can completely understand the reasoning behind not wanting a demon in the bathroom, for one thing it would be REALLY annoying.

I just love how the text goes from one day talking about the proper tithes to the poor and then just pivots right into a discussion about how big an appetite giants might have. I don't have anything more to say but I felt the need to drop in there for some spicy Talmud discourse.

Hahaha, I hope you're not disappointed by constant wafflings about fictional nonsense and theological angst in that case! I am what I like to call Jewish-ish, come from a bizarre background that saw me going to church on Sunday and shul on Saturday, so I've always worried about being an outsider when it comes to being Jewish, and I'm pretty sure your studies will make you a higher authority on torah than me! tl;dr I'm like a budget Jew, lol.

I'm a convert who has a masters in Hebrew Bible and has to unlearn it all bc I learned it through a Christian lens. So.... I'm Jew-ish as well. I'm still converting, actually. Not done yet. Takes awhile. And in times of COVID.... well. It just takes awhile. And I love both fictional nonsense and theological angst, as I do them myself. I also like to yell about good books because holy COW do more people need to read Gideon the Ninth!

it's difficult, right? Christianity places such an impossible emphasis on the idea of prophecy, and it's hard to step back from that when you've had so many louder voices around you insisting on a certain reading of the text. I do still have a fondness for the KJV though, and it's kind of my default when I need to bust out a quote. I don't envy you conversion classes, I think I'd probably be expected to take them too if I wanted to be taken seriously but I've kind of learnt to live with being a mongrel. :p

And I'm all about book talk! Nothing makes me happier!

It really does. And my go to is the NRSV. But I'm trying to rework my ear to the Hebrew and the JPS versions, which -- the Hebrew version is beautiful in its own right but my auditory translation matrix is still not 100% so I just sort of listen in a trance and it might as well be Klingon. And the JPS has some of the cadences I loved from the NRSV so that's not that hard of a switch. But I do have a bunch of unlearning to do as to the significance of various archaeological finds and inscriptions.

Gideon the Ninth is AMAZING. And hilarious. It's a disaster sword lesbian guarding her childhood frenemy as her frenemy has to go to a necromancer's conference in SPACE. I love it. It's so well done. It's not slapstick, just genuinely funny. And touching. And there's a sequel out called Harrow the Ninth and it's ALSO amazing and I am SO READY for book three to be out.

+1 for "Jewish-ish"! I'm 1/4 Jewish, have a very Jewish name but am not halachically Jewish by anyone's standards, but people (both Jews and antisemites) assume I am. It's a weird liminal place to be.

Oh, I get that, I get that. I kind of feel that I've had enough shit from people throughout my life for being Jewish to qualify as Jewish, even if it doesn't sit well with the hassidim, so, you know, fuck it. What's that David Ben Gurion quote? [paraphrasing] "I accept anyone as Jewish who is stupid enough to want to be Jewish."

Oh, yes, the Hebrew bible is beautiful and poetic and inspiring, and I'm dreadful because I legit speak more Cantonese than I do Hebrew, but hearing it is wonderful.

Oh, please do talk to one. There's a myth they'll turn you away three times. What they do is light up and give you some homework. Also, reform has some different standards, so depending on where that 1/4 falls, you might be. We accept patrilineal jews. But hey, if you wanna talk out some of the angst, lemme know. I was there. It took me years to talk to a rabbi bc I'm not Jewish at all historically. I was a liberal Christian minister. Seriously, if you ever wanna chat, just hit me up. <3

It was my paternal grandfather that was Jewish. My dad and I were both raised Christian. So I'd have to convert any way you looked at it.

You have as much right as anyone. There's a Mishnah passage, I think, that says the souls of all Jews were present at Sinai -- including those wanting to convert on day because they weren't born into technically Jewish families -- and that we're not less Jewish than Jews born to Jewish families.
